It is unfortunate when time is running out and you have a million things left to get done. It's times like that when you have to abandon the idea of a nice quiet breakfast or lunch perhaps with a book propped open for you to read while you savor your food and start moving. But what to do if you haven't had breakfast or lunch yet? You could hit up a drive-thru....which would take at least five to ten minutes of driving out of your way for one. Or maybe there's one in your path but you still have to possibly wait in line, order and then wait for the money/food exchange. That's going to take five minutes. At least.
Or you could take five minutes at home and make something to bring along.
Orange Juice in a jam jar and half a panino--One egg and a slice of cheddar on sourdough. It took five minutes to make the whole thing and much tastier than a drive-thru sandwich and not nearly as unhealthy either. Maybe it's the plate that is off putting? Why? Is it really any easier to eat a sandwich off an enormous grease covered paper square balanced on your lap that undoubtably will scrunch up funny and leave a smear of something undesirable on your pants?
Orange juice in a jam jar (jam jars work wonderfully for car travel) and a slice of toasted and buttered sourdough. Two minutes top to put together and have ready to go.
I've noticed over the last few months that without a second thought I've packed myself a quick meal to go whenever I was rushing. (Maybe packing two school lunches five days a week makes this a natural thing to do?) It's simple and filling and I never am left with that greasy weighed down feeling that you get from a drive-thru. As a bonus, I find myself quicker to bring the dishes back in the house with me upon my return. I have a bad, gross habit of not immediately removing trash from my car so this is a very good thing. Usually one paper cup will sit in the cup holder until it's replaced with a fresh cup from Starbucks. But fear not--an empty cup usually only sits 1-2 days as my other bad habit is frequenting Starbucks more often than I should.
P.S. I am not advocating eating while driving. I AM however advocating less trash. ;)
