Today is Dr. Suess' Crazy Hat Day at Maia's school. After several botched attempts on our part last week to make a silly paper hat, I got the idea Friday morning to try to knit Maia a hat. She wasn't going to be home all weekend so I would have plenty of time to knit it up without her seeing. I wanted it to be a surprise because if I couldn't knit a hat OR I couldn't knit it in time I didn't want Maia to be disappointed.
At lunchtime on Friday I went and got the yarn and the appropriate sized needles. (I'm still building my needle collection) Then, I met Missy for lunch. That afternoon, I knitted about 2 inches of the hat. Rick and I went to a party Friday night. On Saturday, Rick and I went skiing all day with our friend, Craig, and his girlfriend, Aly. I did knit about a half an inch on the way to the slopes but it was too dark to knit on the return journey. Before going to sleep, I got another half inch finished.
Sunday arrived and I knit. All day. And I finished it just before Maia came home!
This morning before school I hurriedly took a few pictures. You'll notice in typical non-photographer fashion I ignored everything in the background. Don't pay attention to that coat draped over the newel post. Or my cell phone charge wire that feel the floor. Focus on the hat.
It's the first time I knitted anything with color changes. And after about 25? 26? color changes I think I've got it down!
The tail is really long. I was hoping it would look like the Cat in the Hat's hat. Except a floppy version of it. Does it remind you of the Cat's hat? Or do you think it looks more like a candy cane?
