Um...Not really. More like 9-2:45.
The past two days (and the next 3) I've been helping (sort of, lol) out at Rick's office. I've been going in soon after the kids are at school and leaving with enough time to get home, park the car and walk to the school to collect them at dismissal. It's been a very long time since I've worked in an actual office. The last two times I can technically say I was IN the office for any length of time was when I was in the Air Force.
The first job consisted of data entry (surprise) of Defense Language Institute test scores, answering the phone, locating-packaging-sending scores to various universities and colleges and very general straightening up which mostly was sending copies of old tests through a very old and scary and LOUD shredder.
The second job was when I was Head of CQ (Charge of Quarters). This was THE job to have. It had to be the easiest, most relaxing job ever. I could have easily spent a good portion of my early twenties doing this (I admit this somewhat shamefaced, lol) It consisted of supervising 2-3 other airman from 3-11 pm, Sunday thru Thursday. (This means I got to sleep in!) Our duties were an hourly patrol of the upper and lower barracks to check for security breaches (Sounds important, huh? Really it was making sure no one was doing anything supspicious looking and making sure doors that were supposed to be locked were locked), taking down the flag at sunset, assisting airmen (as all the sergeants and stuff were gone for the night) and taking phonecalls. The phone calls were usually from either Airmen or people wanting to verify an airmen's employment, location, etc. As head, I wasn't allowed to leave our office so I got the extra easy job. =D Best part--our office was attached to the dayroom where everyone hung out (had things like tvs, video games, pool tables, couches, etc., etc. It WAS the place to be when you weren't on duty--and I got to be there while I was ON duty. Cushy.
Anyways---back to the current day. Yesterday, I checked some numbers, answered the phone and filled up the stapler. Go me! Ha! Today I got to do a few different things in addition to answering the phone. I'm feeling more comfortable on the phone and despite not being 100% confident who gets what calls yet, I'm pretty sure I'll get better at this. Rose taught me how to order supplies which led to one of my 'nervous moments.'
I was checking with Bob to see if he needed anything ordered and he handed me 2 sheets of handwritten pages to type up in Word. Things in columns. Gulp. Not at all like typing a novel. He handed it to me with complete surety that I could do it that I didn't feel I could let him know that I might bungle it. After I finished the supply ordering I got started on typing up Bob's things. He only made one suggestion after I presented him with the typed versions so I think that was pretty good. And it was only a suggestion of adding a few spaces (which he did not have in the handwritten version) so all in all I felt pretty good about it.
I ordered some forms via telephone and then got to type a few more things. Missy made fun of my Word skills because I didn't do the column thing using a table and instead tabbed over to each column and pushed the space bar to center it but I don't think it took me that much longer to do it that way. After all, I've never had classes in Word (like she has had) but I got it done and I think the stuff I typed up only took maybe an extra 3 minutes. Maybe I'll just have to get Missy to give me a crash course (You are reading this, right Mis?) or get the 'Word for Dummies' book. Hmmm...or maybe I'll just keep using the space bar! I learned a few other small things, too, not really worth mentioning and I polished off 3 small-to-medium tootsie rolls that were in the jar on the desk.
Bored yet? Don't worry--I won't go into any more details other than to say it's quite a change from cleaning and doing other things I need to do!
